Every major e-bike part explained

Battery

The energy store. Typically 48V lithium-ion (Li-ion) in government scheme bikes. Capacity measured in Ah (ampere-hours) — a 26Ah pack stores more energy and gives more range than a 20Ah. The battery is the most expensive single component and the one most affected by Pakistan's summer heat.

Hub Motor

An electric motor built into the rear wheel hub. When power flows, the outer housing spins the wheel. No chain or gears involved — simple, reliable, and almost maintenance-free. Wattage (W) determines how powerful the motor is: 250W handles flat roads and moderate loads; 1,000W handles hills and heavier loads.

Controller

The electronic brain. It reads throttle input, decides how much power to draw from the battery, and drives the motor at the right current. A quality controller protects the motor from overcurrent. If an e-bike cuts out suddenly or behaves erratically, a faulty controller is often the first suspect.

BMS (Battery Management System)

Built into the battery pack. The BMS monitors every cell's voltage, prevents overcharging (stops at full charge), prevents over-discharging (cuts power before the battery is fully flat), balances cells, and monitors temperature. A good BMS can double a battery's effective lifespan.

Display / Instrument Cluster

Usually an LCD or LED panel on the handlebar showing: battery level (%), current speed (km/h), trip distance (km), total odometer, and assist mode. Some displays also show motor power consumption. A working display is important — it shows you the battery state before and during the ride.

Throttle

The hand control that commands the motor. Government scheme bikes use either a twist throttle (like a motorbike) or a thumb throttle (a lever pushed with the thumb). Squeezing or twisting signals the controller to deliver power. Smooth, gradual throttle use extends battery life compared to punching full throttle from standstill.

Charger

Converts 220V AC mains power to the DC voltage the battery needs. A 48V lithium pack needs a 54.6V charger — the extra volts above nominal are normal for full charge. Always use only the supplied charger. Third-party chargers at the wrong voltage cause permanent battery damage and void the warranty.

Charging Port

The socket on the bike where the charger plugs in. Usually a round XLR-style or proprietary connector. Keep it covered when not charging — dust and water entry cause connector corrosion. A corroded charging port causes intermittent charging problems before it fails completely.

What is a BMS on an electric bike?

BMS stands for Battery Management System. It is an electronic circuit built into the battery pack that monitors and protects the battery: it prevents overcharging (cuts off at full charge), prevents over-discharging (cuts off before the battery runs flat), balances cells for even wear, and monitors temperature. A good BMS significantly extends battery life. Government scheme bikes with lithium-ion batteries should have a built-in BMS — confirm this before buying.

What is the controller on an electric bike?

The controller is the brain of an e-bike — it converts the battery's DC power into the variable current the motor needs to run at different speeds. It reads throttle input, interprets pedal sensor data (on PAS-equipped bikes), enforces speed limits, and protects the motor from overcurrent. If an e-bike suddenly loses power or cuts out mid-ride, a failed controller is often the cause.

What is the difference between throttle and pedal assist on an e-bike?

Throttle mode (used by most Pakistani government scheme bikes) means the motor runs when you twist or push the throttle — like a motorbike, with no pedalling needed. Pedal Assist System (PAS) mode means the motor activates only when you pedal, with a sensor detecting pedalling motion. Most Pakistani scheme bikes are throttle-only, making them operate more like electric motorcycles than traditional pedal-assist e-bikes.
