E-bike specification glossary — what every number means
Dealer spec sheets are full of numbers — 48V, 26Ah, 500W, IP65, BMS, PAS. This glossary explains every term in plain language so you can compare bikes confidently before choosing a government scheme model.

Voltage (V)
The electrical pressure of the system — higher = more power and speedCommon values: 36V (budget/low-power), 48V (standard Pakistani scheme bikes), 60V (higher power/speed). A 48V system can typically reach 40–45 km/h; a 60V system can reach 55–65 km/h depending on controller limits. Voltage does not directly affect range — that depends on Ah capacity.
Ampere-hours (Ah)
The battery's energy storage — like the fuel tank sizeMultiply voltage × Ah to get watt-hours (Wh), the true energy measure. A 48V 26Ah pack = 1,248 Wh. A 48V 20Ah pack = 960 Wh. The higher the Ah, the more range. For Pakistani commuting (20–30 km/day), a 20Ah pack is adequate; for longer routes or hilly terrain, 26Ah+ is better.
Watt-hours (Wh)
Total usable energy in the battery — the most accurate range predictorWh = Voltage × Ah. Two bikes with different voltage/Ah combinations but the same Wh will have similar real-world range (all else equal). Use Wh to compare batteries with different voltages fairly. A 500Wh pack will typically give 40–60 km real-world range in city conditions.
Motor wattage (W)
How powerful the motor is — higher = faster acceleration and better hill climbing250W motors meet the legal limit in many countries and handle flat city roads at 25–35 km/h. 500W motors give better acceleration and handle gentle slopes. 1,000W+ motors are for cargo loads, steep hills, or high speeds (55–70 km/h range). Government scheme bikes in Pakistan range from 350W to 1,000W. Higher wattage uses more electricity — shorter range.
Nominal vs Peak power
Nominal = continuous rated power; peak = maximum burst for a few secondsA motor rated 500W nominal might peak at 1,000W for short bursts (starting from a standstill or going up a steep incline). Always compare nominal power ratings, not peak, to get a fair comparison between bikes. Dealers sometimes advertise peak power — ask for the nominal figure.
Range (km)
How far you can travel on a full chargeAdvertised range is always measured under ideal conditions: light rider, flat road, 25 km/h constant speed. Real-world range in Pakistan is typically 60–75% of advertised range. Key factors: rider weight, speed, traffic (stop-start drains more), temperature, terrain, battery age, and throttle use vs pedalling. Always plan based on 65% of the advertised figure.
Charge time
How long a full charge takes from empty to fullDepends on battery capacity and charger amperage. A standard 2A charger takes 6–8 hours for a 48V 26Ah pack. A 5A fast charger does the same in 3–4 hours but generates more heat and shortens battery life if used daily. Avoid charging from below 10% or above 95% every single day — charge to 80–90% for daily use to extend battery life.
BMS (Battery Management System)
The safety electronics inside the battery packThe BMS monitors each cell, prevents overcharging, prevents over-discharging (which damages Li-ion cells permanently), balances cells for even wear, and shuts down if temperature is dangerous. A quality BMS is the single biggest factor in long battery life. Government scheme bikes should have an active BMS — confirm with the dealer before buying.
PAS (Pedal Assist System)
Motor activates when you pedal — works with your effort, not instead of itPAS uses a cadence or torque sensor to detect pedalling and deliver proportional motor assistance. Level 1 PAS gives light assistance; level 5 gives maximum. Most Pakistani government scheme bikes are throttle-only (twist/thumb throttle), not PAS. True PAS bikes are more efficient — the rider's pedalling reduces load on the battery — but are less common in the Pakistani market.
Throttle
Hand control that drives the motor without pedallingTwo types: twist throttle (like a motorcycle) and thumb throttle (pressed with the thumb). Both send a signal to the controller to deliver power. Full throttle from standstill drains the battery faster and stresses the motor — apply gradually for better range. Throttle-only bikes are common in Pakistan; they feel like riding a light electric motorcycle.
IP Rating (Ingress Protection)
How well the battery/motor is sealed against dust and waterFormat: IP followed by two digits. First digit (0–6): dust protection (6 = dust-tight). Second digit (0–8): water protection (4 = splashing, 5 = water jets, 7 = 1m submersion, 8 = deeper). For Pakistan: IP54 is minimum for light rain; IP65 is recommended for monsoon riding; IP67 is ideal if you ride through flooded roads. Check the battery IP rating specifically — the motor is usually well-sealed but battery connectors can be vulnerable.
Torque (Nm)
Rotational force — how powerfully the motor pulls from standstillMeasured in Newton-metres (Nm). Higher torque means stronger acceleration from standstill and better low-speed hill climbing. A 250W hub motor typically produces 20–40 Nm. A 1,000W motor can produce 80–120 Nm. For Pakistani city riding (frequent traffic stops), more torque improves daily comfort even more than higher top speed.
Controller (A rating)
The electronic brain — its amperage determines how much power reaches the motorControllers are rated in amps (e.g., 15A, 25A, 45A). A 48V 25A controller can deliver 1,200W peak. Higher amperage = more power available but also faster battery drain. Controller quality affects smooth power delivery and motor longevity. A mismatched controller (too high amp) can burn a motor over time.
Regenerative braking
Motor acts as a generator when braking, recovering some energyHub motors on e-bikes can sometimes regen-brake — when braking, the motor resists, slowing the bike and charging the battery slightly. The energy recovered is typically 5–15% of riding energy in city conditions — it adds a small range boost and reduces brake pad wear. Not all Pakistani scheme bikes have this feature; it is worth asking about.
